A study into the existence of an Urban Heat Island in Sheffield, UK

With rapid conversion of vegetated, undisturbed land to urban land uses with the process of urbanisation, comes an alteration in the local climate of an area and the formation of an Urban Heat Island (UHI). A substantial amount of previous work has found that the climate of a city differs from the surrounding rural regions, with a big input on the effects of urban geometry. Competing views exist over the exact influence from urban geometry, as well as how large scale weather conditions affect the UHI of a city. This work will aim to establish if Sheffield has a marked UHI, and to distinguish the true influence of the climatic and geometrical factors on the UHI of Sheffield, if it exists.
