Ägyptologie als Wissenschaft

Adolf Erman was an outstanding scholar and founding father of German Egyptology. His writings are milestones in the study of the language and religious and literary history of Ancient Egypt. His lively correspondence with other leading scholars (Max Planck, Theodor Mommsen, Eduard Meyer, Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorf) illuminates the tension and excitement of the discourse between the academic, political and social domains in the transition from the 19th century up until the 1930s.

The present volume focuses on Erman's achievements and his significance for the history of ideas and scholarship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
