Analysis of Drinking Water Discoloration

This book explores the root cause of discoloration events occurring in potable water pipelines, available pipeline cleaning techniques to pass DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate) water quality parameters at the earliest opportunity. Current literature identifies that there are three primary materials that are linked to discoloration and they are aluminum, iron and manganese. Over time these particles build-up on the internal of the pipe walls and when flow velocities are increased, for example, in a burst water main scenario, the pipeline is scoured and the particles are mobilized into the network. The customer may experience these particles at the tap and a visual impact of particles leads to customer complaints. This work focuses on two main cleaning methodologies, which are ice pigging and pressure jetting.
