Bioceramic Materials in Clinical Endodontics

This book focuses on hydraulic calcium silicate-based materials available in clinical dentistry, used as pulp capping materials, root canal sealers, root-end fillers, or root repair materials and which offer improved properties and easier clinical application compared with the original mineral trioxide aggregate.  The book introduces the current classification of bioceramic materials and explains their characterization and their physicochemical and biological properties. Thereafter, the various clinical applications of these materials are discussed in depth with reference to the evidence base. The coverage includes applications in endodontic treatments and complications, traumatic dental injuries, management of the vital pulp in both dentitions, and regenerative endodontic procedures. Apart from presenting the latest research on hydraulic calcium silicate-based materials, Bioceramic Materials in Clinical Endodontics promotes an essential balance between basic laboratory and clinical research. It will thus be an important reference for materials science specialists, clinical researchers, and clinicians.

Saulius Drukteinis, DDS, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Vilnius University, Vilnius, Lithuania, where he coordinates the postgraduate program in endodontology. Dr. Drukteinis gained his DDS from Kaunas Medical University, Kaunas, Lithuania in 1998. He completed his training as an endodontologist at Vilnius University in 2002 and was awarded his doctorate by the same university in 2010. He is a committed researcher and has practical experience in clinical dentistry and endodontology as well as more than 15 years of teaching experience in dentistry and endodontology. His scientific interests include the biological and physicochemical properties of root canal filling materials and the physical and mechanical properties of endodontic instruments and their efficiency in root canal cleaning and shaping. He has published 15 papers in peer-reviewed journals and delivered more than 50 presentations at national and international conferences.

Josette Camilleri, BChD, MPhil, PhD, FICD, FADM, FIMMM, FHEA, is a Reader in Applied Endodontic Materials (Clinical) and an Honorary Specialty Dentist at the School of Dentistry, College of Medical and Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham, and Birmingham Dental Hospital, United Kingdom. She is a Visiting Professor at the University of Leuven and the University of Oslo. Her research has focused primarily on hydraulic dental cements; she has tested these material types extensively and her research has led to further material development and changes in clinical practice. In 2018 she was awarded the Louis Grossman Prize by the French Endodontic Society in recognition of the cumulative publication of significant research studies that have made an extraordinary contribution to Endodontology. Dr. Camilleri has also been awarded various fellowships, including a Fellowship from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the Academy of Dental Materials, the international College of Dentists  and the Higher Education Academy. She is the Chief Specialty editor of Dental Materials in Frontiers of Dental Medicine and Senior Editorial board member of Scientific Reports (Nature). She has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, 23 of which are during 2017-8 alone, has an H-index of 46 and has been cited over 7800 times.
