DNA Barcode Atlas & Diversity of Fishes from Garhwal Himalaya India

Fish constitute an important and plentiful source of high quality animal protein. Fisheries and aquaculture contribute 1.04 per cent to the national GDP and 5.34 per cent to agriculture and allied activities. Fishery resources are two types viz., marine and cold water. India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have experienced a significant revolution in inland fishery production during the last six decades. Inland fisheries include fisheries in rivers, canals, reservoirs, ponds and tanks, etc. Because of this revolution, India is presently at number two spot in terms of fish/fish product export. But still a lot more can be achieved. Himalayan fresh water system provides a unique ecological habitat for cold water / trout fisheries. To develop cold water fisheries, base line data on various fish species, their distribution and habitat preferences is a must. The present research work carried out by Dr. Madhu Thapliyal, Dr. Bipin Kumar Sati, Dr. Hemlata Pokhriyal and Prof. A. Thapliyal. Entire team has been working on this project to complete this study with meaningful results. The students working in this area of research will also benefit from this work.
