This volume of documents is a contribution to research on the academic history of the discipline. The sources are from numerous archives and ‑ almost without exception ‑ have not been published previously. Part I contains documents from the establishment of the first academic chair for German Philology up to the differentiation into Old German Philology and New German Philology.
