Dialectical Thinking. An Unfinished Project

'From among innumerable criticisms of dialectical thinking, two anti-Hegelian positions will be discussed here: Rudolf Haym''s and Gilles Deleuze''s, the latter of which represents a Nietzschean line of argument. Taking into consideration the sometimes quite understandable questions that they raise, we will see that they nevertheless miss their target, in part by mistaking Hegel''s dialectical thinking for dialectical thinking in general, for what it might yet become. An alternative will be proposed: Theodor W. Adorno''s negative dialectic. Referring to certain dilemmas and paradoxes of experience, we will see how Adorno''s open dialectic can offer a response to the view, shared in part by Adorno himself, according to which Hegelian dialectical thinking runs the risk of underestimating historically situated individuality, plurality, and difference.'
