Die literarische Landschaft

Nature, on its own, does not reveal itself as landscape. Rather, the concept of landscape develops in the perspective of the beholder, who assigns it expressiveness and significance. The visual arts have developed this perspective, and literature has followed suit. The book reconstructs the history of the landscape in the arts, particularly in the literature of the 19th century. The arts open up the world of senses, making them receptive for their stimuli, their beauty and their sublimity, which literature accomplishes in a different way from painting. But in the presentations of both the immense fascination of nature can be felt ‑ and this is what this book is about.
