With this narrative of two love stories, separated by twenty years, set in Manhattan and Nottingham, and inspired by the game of chess, the reader gets drawn into some big issues like social justice, sexual identity, suicide and the Jewish-Palestinian conflict.

Allissa Oldenberg sees a lot of herself in Helen Painter, the fictional author in En Passant. She was inspired by Borges as a student, enjoys playing chess, loves cats, her dog, progressive rock and travel; and discovered late in life that her father was Jewish. This is her first novel to be published, but there are several more in the pipeline.
