England Resounding is an account of the spectacular revival of serious music in England during the first three quarters of the twentieth century. It was music of a semantic richness that had not been produced in England since the time of Purcell and Handel. The renaissance was begun by Edward Elgar and sustained by composers from the next two generations: Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten.
