Housing Policy in Bulgaria

The first attempts to look at the housing as an integral component of the national socioeconomic structure were made in Bulgaria during the 1970s. This was, however, done mainly in the theoretical frame and did not influence decision making process under the then existing totalitarian governance. The book analyses Bulgarian housing policy development in the last 70 years since the middle of XX-th century. The influence of political changes on the social and spatial structure is explored. The current Bulgarian housing policy activities (some with author¿s participation) are being critically reviewed. The future trends of Bulgarian housing are being considered in the context of the accelerating global conflict between the natural and man-made environment. Such a conflict requires a re-evaluation of fundamental system values of the modern civilization. The idea for sustainable development has multiple dimensions and many of these relate to housing. This book aims to foster research and development of adequate housing policies for Bulgaria. It addresses major issues facing housing policy in Bulgaria based on an analysis of the theoretical and practical lessons of worldwide experience.
