Introduction to Austrian and European Legal History

This manual is designed for students of the new course of study 'International Legal Studies' beginning in fall semester 2021/22 at the University of Vienna. Austrian Legal History will be presented in its european context. In the chronologically organized part, the most important milestones of European Legal History. In the systematically organized part, fundamental legal concepts are being explained and problems spanning vast time periods are being discussed. A main focal point is furthermore the history of European Integration. It is an objective of the book to promote understanding of the many interrelations of modern law and to make clear the maxims of European Legal Culture. These maxims are a product of the historical evolution - and themselves changing continuously.

Thomas Olechowski is professor for Austrian and European Legal History at the University of Vienna. He is director of the federal foundation "Hans Kelsen-Institute" and full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
