Judentum und Popkultur

What is Jewish? The question of cultural classifications and religious traditions are often addressed in pop culture in surprising and playful ways. Even Judaism appears in the pop culture of the 20th and 21st century not as something solid, but as a malleable figure in a play which is constantly being restaged. Caspar Battegay's essay looks into this play of figures of Jewishness in a selection of extremely diverse films, TV series, songs and texts. In the process, not only is a new research area in Jewish Studies in Germany created - the theory of pop culture is also enriched through the previously neglected Jewish dimension.

Caspar Battegay (Dr. phil.) lehrt am Institut für Jüdische Studien der Universität Basel. Seine Interessensgebiete sind deutsch-jüdische Literatur, Literaturtheorie, moderne Geistesgeschichte und Popkultur.
