Title: Kurunchi Subtitle: A Spiritual Anthology including The Tale of Yasuke: The Black Samurai Kurunchi is the first part of a highly original anthology book of short stories with interconnecting ideas and characters. The style is based on Ancient Tamil Sangam Literature, taking into account 'Akam' and 'Puram' (the inside and outer fields which express inside emotion and talk about the beauty of location/country or setting) .The book also includes the tale of Yasuke. He was an African slave who was sold into slavery in the 16th century, moved to Japan and became a high ranking samurai. Other stories include : Waves from the South and Aappu and the Deformed Child which showcase historical Sri-Lanka and spiritual Hinduism.
Author: Steffen Kajendra I studied law in England for several years and moved back to my homeland- Denmark. I was born in Djursland but raised in London so my chosen language in writing is English but my work was written in Aarhus. My ethnicity is Sri Lankan and this pushes me towards themes in my writing that Western writers seldom write about. My writing journey is imbedded in film-making. It was only when I watched world cinema that I started to put pen to paper and write my own stuff. Things like Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love and Mani Ratnam's Nayakan drove me to this endeavour. I thought to myself that I want to convey messages, emotions and wonder to cinema-goers. To do that, I need to show proficiency in writing, if I can prove to myself that my writing can illicit an emotion response; then I can move on to be a filmmaker. So at this current moment, writing is part of my journey to reach elsewhere. It is only through my readers that I can know if I am successful.
