Indeed, the invocation and then the study of the Berber Empires served to characterize a great Other of proximity : the Maghreb at once so close and yet so different. Studying this past therefore amounted to giving perspectives to this radical difference. In the context of the colonized and then newly independent Maghreb, this yet distant past never ceased to serve as a reference and as a framework for a 'roman national' which aimed to give these States a solid foundation.
Mehdi Ghouirgate est Professeur à l'Université Bordeaux-Montaigne (Institut Ausonius) et affilié à l'Université Polytechnique Mohammed VI FGSES. Titulaire d'une Habilitation à diriger les recherches obtenue à l'EHESS, il est spécialiste de l'Histoire de l'Occident musulman aux époques médiévale et moderne. Il s'attache à revisiter cette histoire en s'appuyant sur une démarche résolument pluridisciplinaire qui fait appel, entre autres, à l'anthropologie, à l'économie, à la codicologie, à l'histoire militaire et à la démographie.
