Jai Raman, MD, FRACS, PhD, is director of the Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery and surgical director, Advanced Heart Failure, Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He is a professor in the Department of Surgery. An internationally recognized leader in cardiac surgery, Raman has pioneered numerous new surgical procedures, focusing primarily on heart transplantation and the treatment of heart failure. These innovations include techniques to stop the heart from enlarging in heart failure patients; a method of restoring the shape and size of scarred heart chambers; the development of new surgical instruments for the minimally invasive removal of tissue that causes abnormal heart rhythm; and new techniques for repairing the heart's mitral and tricuspid valves. He has the largest experience in the Chicago region with minimally invasive cardiac surgery, including aortic surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting, and procedures to treat arrhythmias and valve problems.
