Moving Images

In recent years, spectacular images of ruined boats, makeshift border camps, and beaches littered with life vests have done much to consolidate the politics of migration and refugeeism in Europe. The mediation of migration as a crisis, in turn, has done much to shore up certain kinds of humanitarian response, legislative action, and affective investment. Bridging artistic practice and academic inquiry, the essays and artworks gathered in Moving Images interrogate the mediation of migration and refugeeism in the contemporary European conjuncture, asking how images, discourses, and data are involved in shaping visions of migration in increasingly global contexts.

Krista Geneviève Lynes is Canada Research Chair in Feminist Media Studies and Associate Professor in Communication Studies at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada) where she also founded and directs the Feminist Media Studio.
Tyler Morgenstern is a PhD candidate in the Department of Film & Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a doctoral fellow of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His work focuses on the imbrications between information and communication technologies and the racial and territorial politics of empire. He is also a contributing member of the Media Fields editorial collective at UCSB.
Ian Alan Paul is a transdisciplinary artist and theorist and is Assistant Professor of Emerging Media in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University. His projects examine instantiations of power and practices of resistance in global contexts, and have been exhibited and published internationally.
