This volume presents the proceedings of the 3rd ICBHI which took place in Thessaloniki on 18-21 November, 2017.The area of biomedical and health informatics is exploding at all scales. The developments in the areas of medical devices, eHealth and personalized health as enabling factors for the evolution of precision medicine are quickly developing and demand the development of new scaling tools, integration frameworks and methodologies.
Nicos Maglaveras received the diploma in electrical engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), Greece, in 1982, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering with an emphasis in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1985 and 1988, respectively. Currently, he is a visiting Professor at the McCormick School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Dept. of Industrial Engg & Management Sciences and Dept. of Electrical Engg & Computer Science, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. He is also a Professor and Director at the Lab of Computing, Medical Informatics & Biomedical Imaging Technologies, A.U.Th. He is head of the graduate program in medical informatics at A.U.Th, and is a collaborating researcher with the Center of Research and Technology Hellas, the Institute of Applied Biosciences (CERTH-INAB) head of the Informatics for Big Biodata Laboratory His current research interests include nonlinear biological systems simulation, cardiovascular engineering, biomedical informatics, ehealth, AAL, personalised health, biosignal analysis, medical imaging, and neurosciences. He has published more than 400 papers in peer reviewed international journals, books and conference proceedings out of which over 110 as full peer review papers in indexed international journals. He has developed graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of (bio)medical informatics, personal health systems, biomedical signal processing, physiology and biological systems simulation. He has served as a Reviewer in CEC AIM, ICT and DGRT D-HEALTH technical reviews and as reviewer, associate editor and editorial board member in more than 10 international journals, and participated as Coordinator or Core Partner in over 40 national and EU-funded competitive research projects attracting more than 16 MEUROs in funding. He has served as president of the EAMBES in 2008-2010. Dr. Maglaveras has been a member of the IEEE, AMIA, the Greek Technical Chamber, the New York Academy of Sciences, the CEN/TC251, and Eta Kappa Nu.
Ioanna Chouvarda (F), Electrical Eng PhD, is Assistant Professor in Medical Informatics, at School of Medicine, AUTH and collaborating researcher with CERTH. She has been involved in medical informatics research for the last twenty years, as regards biomedical data analysis and management, and the generation of eHealth systems and services. She is particularly interested in connected health technologies for chronic disease management, prevention and wellbeing, as well as in the knowledge discovery from physiological and behavioural data and their interplay. In her work at AUTH and CERTH, she has collaborated with numerous European research teams within EU projects (from FP5 to H2020). She has developed as series of undergraduate and graduate lessons in the domain of biomedical informatics, with an interdisciplinary scope. She is member of the IEEE and Associate Editor in Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. She has authored more than 50 peer reviewed papers in international journals, as well as numerous papers in conference proceedings and book chapters.
Prof. Dr. Paulo de Carvalho (male) received his PhD in Informatics Engineering in 2002 from the University of Coimbra, where is an Associate Professor. His main research interests are adaptive computational techniques with application to bio-signals (particularly, cardiac bio-signals such as ECG, heart sounds, ICG, PPG and BP), Pattern Recognition, modelling and Clinical Informatics. His publications include several book chapters and over 200 papers in refereed national and international journals and conferences. He has served as project coordinator and team leader in several national and EU projects such as MyHeart, HeartCycle, and HeartWays, Welcome and LiNK. He is the coordinator of the IFMBE working group on Health Informatics. He is an elected member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra and was the former director of the Informatics Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra a former vice-president of the Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar of the University of Coimbra.
