Stabilization of Expansive Soil with Brick Dust and Lime

In India large areas are covered with highly plastic and expansive soil which is not suitable for civil engineering work because expansive soil is weak in strength. Generally, expansive soil swells and shrinks excessively with the change of water content and if any structure is in contact with expansive soil, it experiences differential settlement which leads to failure of structure. Therefore it is not suitable to use expansive soil without modifying its geotechnical properties. There are various process which are available like chemical, mechanical, biological or combined method in order to improve the strength parameters of soils. The soil stabilization has grown up a major concern in construction engineering and many studies have been conducted to determine the use of different types of materials as a new stabilizing agent. Brick is one of the important material which is used in construction. To produce brick, their are numerous brick kiln which has grown over decades in an unplanned way in different parts of the country. Brick dust is a waste material which is produced from brick kiln and which is not recycled yet and generally used for land filling.
