The main purpose of this thesis is studying how Chopin undertakes the protagonist's struggle between her non-traditional ideas, her will for freedom, equality with men, and sovereignty in a male-defined society controlled by the late nineteenth-century ideals. This thesis reveals that Edna is able to rebel against her masters and traditions due to massive awakenings she lives and goes through in the novel.
