The Bear in Sheep's Clothing

It is clear from a study of Russia's history and an examination of recent events that Russia is trying to emerge as a dominant entity among the world's powerful nations. Within the region of Central Asia, Russia is maneuvering through political, military, and economic means to assert its influence in an effort to control the area's oil and gas industry and create a protective buffer against extremist activity on the Russian periphery. The individual actions presented in this professional studies paper could make it appear as though Russia is conducting routine and legitimate business within Central Asia, but when viewed collectively, and through the lens of Russia's foreign policy objectives, these actions convey Russia's intent to emerge from the ruins of the Soviet Union as a nation that possesses the influence, and if necessary the strength, to operate among the worlds strongest nations. Russia's actions in Central Asia are but one element, and an initial step, towards this goal.
