The Interrelationship of Leisure and Play

Augmentative play is a special activity that substantially aids the pursuit of a larger, encompassing leisure activity. This approach to the study of play is unique. It recognizes the hundreds of activities in which play and leisure come together.

Robert A. Stebbins is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary, Canada. Among his many publications are Serious Leisure: A Perspective for Our Time, The Idea of Leisure, and Planning Your Time in Retirement. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
