The Jewish Community of Golders Green

The first Jews settled in Golders Green just before the First World War, and by 1930 the suburb had been recognised for its significant Jewish community. By 1960 the Jewish population of Golders Green had tripled. A century after the arrival of the first Jewish families, the community remains very diverse and is growing rapidly. Golders Green is now the most Jewishly populous neighbourhood in the country. Despite its prominence and its vibrancy, the Jewish Community of Golders Green have not been the subject of a detailed historical study. This book addresses this oversight and - based to a significant extent on the memories and knowledge of the community - fills an important gap in Anglo-Jewish history.

PAM FOX is an experienced writer living in Golders Green. Surrounded by the history and vibrancy of the Jewish community, she has been inspired to write about its history. In 2008 she conducted a study on the experience of women rabbis, and in 2000 started work on the hundred-year history of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, which was featured at Jewish Book Week in 2011. During 2012 she contributed to a guide to Jewish London. Pam is a Research Fellow at Leo Baeck College and in 2014 was awarded a prestigious month-long Fellowship at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. One of her most recent publications is a biography of Israel Mattuck, which has been favourably reviewed in several journals, including the journal for the Jewish Historical Society of England, the top Jewish history periodical, and nominated for an award by the Jewish Book Council in the US. Pam has spoken at many events and venues about her work.
