The Trumpet-Major tells the story of the rather gentle heroine Anna Garland, the noble daughter of a nonexistent landscape painter, who is looked after by two brothers of the working class, the sons of Miller's Day of Love, in whose house Anna and her mother got down to business a quarter, finding that financially they had slightly decreased in the world. The younger brother Robert is Anna's sailor and beloved child, but he somewhat forgets about his feelings for Ann and even thinks of marrying other women.
