Triumphs of a Herd's Girl

A thirteen-year-old girl watches over her father's herds in rural Kenya, dreaming of an education. Her dream seems impossible: educational opportunities are sparse in colonial Kenya-and practically nonexistent for girls. That girl grew up to be Madam Leah, a respected teacher and primary school headmistress. She would have eight children-five girls-and ensure that the seven who survived infancy all received college educations. She would cofound local women's organizations, educate needy children, and leave the world a better place. This is Madam Leah's story, as told by her oldest daughter. It's the story of a girl whose age, gender, and even height stood between her and the education she sought, and the determination with which she overcame every obstacle in her path. Education is a precious gift-especially when you fight for it every step of the way.
