Understanding YouTube

Amateur videos on the internet - mostly shortened to the keyword »YouTube« - are currently being hotly discussed by the general public and by media studies: what 'shackles' the user, what pulls them into the quicksand of the net? This book opens up a new perspective for the reader on the circulation of video images: unexpected, divergent media practices are analyzed, which oscillate between destruction, intervention, automatism, repetition and imitation, and feed into the production of recycling videos. As is shown here, the initially individual reproduction and dissemination, participation and modification make a »mass medium« out of a medium.

Roman Marek (Dr. phil.) hat am Graduiertenkolleg »Automatismen« der Universität Paderborn promoviert. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Visuelle Kultur, Neue Medien, Marketing und Begriffsgeschichte.
