In 1850, 20 years after the murder of Antonio José de Sucre, and 20 years after he was the undisputed patriotic leader during the battle of Ayacucho, which ended Spanish power in America and with it a lengthy period of continental war, some malicious anonymous contributor to the newspaper El Comercio de Lima questioned the man's merits and the facts of his life. Antonio Jose de Sucre's nephew on the maternal side, Domingo de Alcalá, then undertook a kind of "survey" to ensure that witnesses would testify as to his uncle's true history. These epistolary documents were printed in Lima. This edition includes a brief biography of Sucre written by Simon Bolivar.
