Stefan George (1868 - 1933) and his ‛circle’ had a great influence on intellectual life in Germany in the first decades of the twentieth century. George’s numerous followers were scientists from all fields of the humanities (literary studies, ancient studies, pedagogy, art). In this anthology renowned experts describe and analyze the influence of noted representatives of the ‛circle’ upon various disciplines, e. g. Friedrich Gundolf, Max Kommerell and Ernst Bertram, and their importance for the intellectual climate in the German empire and the Weimar republic.
