IMPACTS OF COASTAL POLLUTION ON BIODIVERSITY AT ENNORE, INDIA

The present study examined the seasonal changes in the pollution load from the various discharges into the Buckingham Canal, Ennore, India and their impacts on the plankton. Samples were collected from surface and near bottom during Spring and Neap tides at high and low tide conditions of each month for one year. Samples were analyzed for the physico-chemical parameters. Due to tidal ingress, the pollutants are transported to sea. The present study confirms that if pollution control measures are not adopted, there is a likely danger for the ecologically rich Pulicat lagoon.
