What storytellers tell us about Azorean culture

In this research, we analysed the meanings that are mobilised to talk about an Azorean culture in the performances and stories of three storytellers who live in the coastal region of the state of Santa Catarina. In this study, storytelling is understood as a cultural pedagogy that contributes to constituting and reinforcing representations of Azorean culture through the reiteration of certain cultural markers. A pedagogy is expressed in storytelling both in the selection of repertoires and the preparation of narrative practices, in which certain characters, contexts and objects are emphasised, and in the performances and interactions built with the audience. The empirical research took place with the participation of three storytellers from the coast of Santa Catarina, between April 2014 and June 2015.
